Other names	Alc alpha, also known as Alcadein alpha or Alzheimer-related cadherin-like protein, is a protein encoded by the CDHR12 gene. It is also referred to as Calsyntenin 1 or CS1. Other aliases for this protein include alcalpha1, alcalpha2, Alzheimer-related cadherin like protein, C-terminal fragment 1-alpha, FLJ32258, KIAA0911, Non-classical cadherin XB31alpha, PIK3CD, SAlc-alpha, and XB31alpha. Alc alpha is a member of the cadherin-related family and plays a role in neuronal development and synaptic plasticity. It is involved in the transport of vesicles in axons and the formation of synapses. Alc alpha has two isoforms, alcalpha1 and alcalpha2, which are expressed in different regions of the brain. The Calsyntenin 1 protein is thought to be involved in the pathogenesis of Alzheimer's disease, as it interacts with beta-amyloid, the protein that accumulates in the brains of Alzheimer's patients. It has also been implicated in other neurological disorders.
