Description	This particular gene is responsible for encoding a receptor that is located on the cell surface of natural killer (NK) cells, as well as some T cells. This receptor plays a crucial role in facilitating the killing of target cells that do not conform to the major histocompatibility complex (MHC) restrictions. The interaction between the NK-cell and the target cells, aided by this receptor, is believed to regulate the cytolytic activity of the NK-cells. Additionally, different isoforms of this gene have been discovered through the presence of alternatively spliced transcript variants.
Other names	The CD244 antigen, also known as Natural Killer cell receptor 2B4 or simply 2B4, is a protein molecule that activates NK cells and induces non-MHC restricted killing associated with these cells. It is also known as the signaling lymphocytic activation molecule 4 and belongs to the family SLAMF4. This molecule is encoded by the CD244_HUMAN gene and is also referred to as Ly90, NAIL or NK cell activation inducing ligand (NAIL). The p38 protein is involved in mediating the signaling processes of this receptor. The NKR2B4 protein is a type I receptor found on NK cells. F730046O15Rik is another name for the same molecule.
