Description | This gene is part of the bone morphogenetic protein (BMP) receptor family, which consists of transmembrane serine/threonine kinases. BMPs, members of the TGF-beta superfamily, are the ligands that bind to this receptor. BMPs play a crucial role in embryogenesis and endochondral bone formation. These ligands transmit their signals by forming heteromeric complexes of two types of serine (threonine) kinase receptors: type I receptors that weigh around 50-55 kD and type II receptors that weigh approximately 70-80 kD. Although type II receptors can bind to ligands individually, they need type I receptors to initiate signaling. Similarly, type I receptors need their respective type II receptors for ligand binding. This gene is associated with primary pulmonary hypertension when mutated. It has been found that several transcript variants encode two different isoforms of this gene. [provided by RefSeq, Feb 2012]. |
| Other names | The protein known as Activin receptor like kinase 6, or Acvrlk6, is also referred to by several other names including ALK 6, ALK6, alk6tr, BMP type-1B receptor, BMPR IB, BMPR-1B, Bmpr1b, BMPRIB, BMR1B_HUMAN, Bone morphogenetic protein receptor type 1B, Bone morphogenetic protein receptor type IB, Bone morphogenetic protein receptor type-1B, BR 1b, BR1b, CDw 293, CDw293, CDw293 antigen, CFK 43a, CFK43a, Serine/threonine receptor kinase, zALK 6, and zALK6. This protein acts as a receptor for a group of proteins called bone morphogenetic proteins, or BMPs. It is involved in the signaling pathways that regulate the growth and development of various tissues in the body. Mutations in the gene encoding this protein have been linked to several developmental disorders, including skeletal malformations and heart defects. Despite the many different names associated with this protein, they all refer to the same molecule. Understanding the role of Acvrlk6 in normal development and disease can provide insights into potential therapeutic targets for a variety of disorders. |

| Application | The recommended dilution for Western blotting is between 1:500 to 1:2000, and for immunohistochemistry is between 1:50 to 1:200. If you are performing an ELISA with a peptide, the suggested dilution range is between 1:20000 to 1:40000. It is important to carefully consider the dilution factor for each application to ensure optimal results and avoid non-specific binding. These recommended dilution ranges have been tested and proven effective for many applications and can serve as a starting point for your own experiments. |

Target | |
Background | On ligand binding, forms a receptor complex consisting of two type II and two type I transmembrane serine/threonine kinases. Type II receptors phosphorylate and activate type I receptors which autophosphorylate, then bind and activate SMAD transcriptional regulators. Receptor for BMP7/OP-1 and GDF5. Positively regulates chondrocyte differentiation through GDF5 interaction. |
