Description | This member of the amyloid precursor protein gene family codes for a gene that is highly conserved. It produces a glycoprotein that is associated with the cell membrane and undergoes cleavage by secretases, similar to the cleavage of the amyloid beta A4 precursor protein. This cleavage releases an intracellular cytoplasmic fragment, which has the potential to function as a transcriptional activator. Additionally, the encoded protein may contribute to the maturation of synapses during the development of the cortex. Various isoforms of this gene, resulting from alternative splicing of the transcript variants, have been identified. |
| Other names | One of the important proteins in the body is the Amyloid Beta A4 Precursor-Like Protein 1 (APLP1), also known as Amyloid Precursor-Like Protein or APLP. This protein is a precursor for the amyloid protein, which is believed to be involved in the development of Alzheimer's disease. APLP1 is involved in the growth and development of nerve cells in the brain, and it is also involved in the regulation of neurotransmitter signaling. It has been shown to have a protective effect on the brain, and studies have suggested that it may play a role in the prevention of neurodegenerative diseases. There is also evidence to suggest that APLP1 may be involved in the regulation of cholesterol metabolism, which is important for overall health and wellbeing. Overall, APLP1 is an important protein that plays a vital role in the functioning of the brain and the body as a whole. |

Target | |
Background | May play a role in postsynaptic function. The C-terminal gamma-secretase processed fragment, ALID1, activates transcription activation through APBB1 (Fe65) binding (By similarity). Couples to JIP signal transduction through C-terminal binding. May interact with cellular G-protein signaling pathways. Can regulate neurite outgrowth through binding to components of the extracellular matrix such as heparin and collagen I. |
| Tissue specificity | Expressed in the cerebral cortex where it is localized to the postsynaptic density (PSD). |
| Posttranslational modification | Proteolytically cleaved by caspases during neuronal apoptosis. Cleaved, in vitro, at Asp-620 by caspase-3 (By similarity).N- and O-glycosylated. O-glycosylation with core 1 or possibly core 8 glycans. Glycosylation on Ser-227 is the preferred site to Thr-228. |
| Celluar localization | Extracellular region or secreted;Plasma Membrane; |
