It is encoded by the AGBL4 gene and is involved in the binding of ATP and GTP. Another name for this protein is FLJ14442. The main function of AGBL4 is to regulate cellular metabolism and signaling pathways. It has been implicated in various diseases and disorders, such as cancer, metabolic syndrome, and neurodegenerative disorders. Attempts are being made to develop drugs that target AGBL4 to treat these diseases.

Its exceptional feature lies in its ability to act as a long-chain deglutamylase, specifically shortening lengthy polyglutamate chains. However, it should be noted that this enzyme cannot remove the glutamate at the branching point, as this particular process is facilitated by AGBL5/CCP5.
