A crucial gene in this process belongs to a family of nuclear proteins that possess a methyl-CpG binding domain (MBD). Within the NuRD, a complex comprising multiple subunits with nucleosome remodeling and histone deacetylase activities, this encoded protein acts as a subunit. However, unlike its family counterparts, it lacks the capability to bind to methylated DNA. Rather, its role lies in facilitating the connection between metastasis-associated protein 2 and the core histone deacetylase complex. Through alternative splicing, different transcript variants of this gene are produced.
