Background

The alpha-fetoprotein gene plays a crucial role in the production of a significant plasma protein during fetal life. It is produced by the liver and yolk sac during this time of development. High levels of alpha-fetoprotein in adults are typically linked to hepatoma or teratoma, but some individuals may show no obvious signs of pathology. Alpha-fetoprotein is considered to be the fetal version of serum albumin and is located adjacent to the albumin gene on chromosome 4. This protein can be found in monomeric, dimeric and trimeric forms and has the ability to bind to copper, nickel, fatty acids and bilirubin. Its presence in amniotic fluid is measured to screen for spina bifida and anencephaly, as it serves as a reliable indicator of renal protein loss.
