Description	This specific gene encodes a cyclic heptapeptide that is conserved in every single organism from lamprey to human. The mature peptide that is created from this gene is known for its vasoconstrictor activity and is solely expressed in brain tissues. It should be noted that despite the similarity in gene family names, this gene is not related to urocortin from the sauvagine/corticotropin-releasing factor/urotensin I family. Once the proprotein is produced, it is mostly cleaved to form the active peptide. A variety of different preproprotein isoforms have been documented for this gene.
Other names	U-II, also known as UCN2, is a preproprotein isoform responsible for the production of urotensin 2. This peptide, encoded by the UTS2 gene, plays a role in various physiological processes. There are two isoforms produced from the urotensin 2 preproprotein, namely isoform a and isoform b. Urotensin 2, also referred to as UT-II, is a biologically active peptide derived from the U-II preproprotein. It is involved in the regulation of cardiovascular function, muscle contraction, and nerve activity. With the identification of the UTS2 gene and its corresponding protein products, further research is being conducted to understand their specific roles and potential therapeutic applications.
