To prevent such outcomes, the protein encoded by this gene is responsible for hydrolyzing oxidized purine nucleoside triphosphates, such as 8-oxo-dGTP, 8-oxo-dATP, 2-hydroxy-dATP, and 2-hydroxy rATP, into monophosphates. This enzymatic process effectively eliminates the risk of misincorporation by sanitizing the nucleotide pools of both nuclear and mitochondrial genomes. The protein is primarily located in the cytoplasm, but some is also found in mitochondria, indicating that its role extends beyond nuclear genome protection. There are several transcript variants of this gene, including some that code for different isoforms of the protein. While additional variants have been identified, their full-length characteristics have not yet been determined. Interestingly, a single-nucleotide polymorphism has been discovered that leads to the production of a longer isoform, known as p26. Background	Antimutagenic. Acts as a sanitizing enzyme for oxidized nucleotide pools, thus suppressing cell dysfunction and death induced by oxidative stress. Hydrolyzes 8-oxo-dGTP, 8-oxo-dATP and 2-OH-dATP, thus preventing misincorporation of oxidized purine nucleoside triphosphates into DNA and subsequently preventing A:T to C:G and G:C to T:A transversions.
