Other namesN-ethylmaleimide sensitive fusion protein (NSF) is a vesicle-fusing ATPase that plays an integral role in intracellular membrane trafficking events. Also referred to as NEM-sensitive fusion protein, the NSF protein is similar in function to N-ethylmaleimide sensitive factor (NSF-like protein), and SKD2. These proteins are all involved in the disassembly of SNARE complexes, which are essential for vesicle fusion. The Vesicular fusion protein NSF is particularly important for regulating neurotransmitter release, and defects in its function have been implicated in certain types of neurological disorders. Overall, the NSF protein and its related proteins are critical for maintaining proper vesicle trafficking in cells, and disruption of their function can lead to significant cellular dysfunction.
