Description

This specific gene encodes a protein that belongs to the immunoglobulin superfamily and is situated on the type I membrane. The protein is found present in antigen-presenting cells and acts as a ligand for two surface-bound proteins, CD28 antigen and cytotoxic T-lymphocyte-associated protein 4, on T cells. While binding with CD28 antigens gives a costimulatory signal to activate T cells, binding with cytotoxic T-lymphocyte-associated protein 4 negatively regulates T-cell activation and brings about a diminished immune response. Additionally, various transcript variants are formed by alternative splicing, giving rise to different isoforms. This information has been provided by RefSeq in May 2011.

Other namesThe B7-2 antigen is responsible for activating B-lymphocytes, and is also known as B-lymphocyte activation antigen B7-2 or simply B7-2. It is also referred to as CD86 and CTLA-4 counter-receptor B7.2. Additionally, it is known as the early T-cell costimulatory molecule 1 or ETC-1. Some other names for this antigen include B70, B72 antigen, BU63, CLS1, FUN-1, LAB72, Ly-58, MB7, and TS/A-2.
This membrane glycoprotein plays a critical role in immune responses by interacting with T-cells and providing necessary signals for their activation. The CD28 antigen ligand 2, or CD28LG2, is also associated with B7-2, and acts as a receptor for T-cells.
In humans, the CD86 molecule is encoded by the CD86 gene. Its expression is found on many cell types, including macrophages, dendritic cells, and B-cells. The binding of B7-2 to T-cells is important for the proliferation and differentiation of B-cells, and is critical for the production of antibodies.
Overall, the B7-2 antigen is a crucial component of the immune system, and plays a vital role in regulating immune responses and promoting the development of effective immune defenses. Its diverse range of functions and interactions with other molecules make it an important target for research in immunology and immunotherapy.

Target

Background

Receptor involved in the costimulatory signal essential for T-lymphocyte proliferation and interleukin-2 production, by binding CD28 or CTLA-4. May play a critical role in the early events of T-cell activation and costimulation of naive T-cells, such as deciding between immunity and anergy that is made by T-cells within 24 hours after activation. Isoform 2 interferes with the formation of CD86 clusters, and thus acts as a negative regulator of T-cell activation.

Tissue specificityExpressed by activated B-lymphocytes and monocytes.
Posttranslational modificationPolyubiquitinated; which is promoted by MARCH8 and results in endocytosis and lysosomal degradation.
Celluar localizationExtracellular region or secreted;Plasma Membrane;
