It is a member of the neuroligin family of proteins, which play important roles in the development and function of synapses, the junctions between nerve cells. The function of Neuroligin Y is not well understood, but it is thought to be involved in synaptic signaling and the regulation of synaptic plasticity. Because it is located on the Y-chromosome, Neuroligin Y is only present in males. Mutations in the NLGN4Y gene have been associated with autism spectrum disorders and other neurological conditions. |
