Description	The mevalonate kinase enzyme, encoded by this gene, plays a crucial role in the synthesis of isoprenoids and sterols, with mevalonate being a key intermediate. Mutations in this gene can lead to a deficiency in mevalonate kinase, which in turn causes mevalonic aciduria - a disorder marked by a variety of symptoms, including psychomotor retardation, anemia, hepatosplenomegaly, recurrent febrile crises and failure to thrive. In addition to mevalonic aciduria, defects in this gene can also lead to hyperimmunoglobulinemia D and periodic fever syndrome, which is characterized by recurring episodes of fever, lymphadenopathy, arthralgia, gastrointestinal issues and skin rash. Interestingly, two transcript variants that encode the same protein have been identified for this gene, highlighting its complexity and importance in cellular processes.
Other names	The gene FLJ96772 encodes for a protein known as LH receptor mRNA binding protein or LRBP. This protein plays a crucial role in the regulation of gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) signaling and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) expression. In addition to this, LRBP also acts as a mevalonate kinase 1, which catalyzes the conversion of mevalonic acid into mevalonate-5-phosphate. Mutations in the gene encoding for LRBP can lead to mevalonic aciduria, a rare genetic disorder characterized by abnormalities in cholesterol synthesis.
