Background

IL18, also known as IFN-gamma-inducing factor or IGIF, is a recently discovered cytokine with potent pro-inflammatory properties. It exhibits the ability to enhance the activity of natural killer (NK) cells in the spleen. Furthermore, IL18 is capable of inducing the production of IFN-gamma by T cells. Interestingly, when IL18 is combined with another cytokine called IL12, it can effectively suppress the production of IgE and IgG1, which are dependent on IL4. On the other hand, it promotes the production of IgG2a by B cells. It is worth noting that IL18 binding protein (IL18BP) can specifically interact with IL18 and exert a negative regulatory effect on its biological activity.
IL18 also has other biological properties such as stimulation of Fas ligand expression, and induction of CC and CXC chemokines. IL18 increases production of competent HIV.
