It is characterized by its rich leucine heptad repeats and is also known by other names such as Highly Expressed in Cancer Protein and Kinetochore-associated Protein 2. HEC is encoded by the KNTC2 gene and is responsible for binding to and stabilizing the kinetochore, a protein complex involved in cell division. It is also known as HsHec1 or hsNDC80, and is homologous to the NDC80 protein found in yeasts.
