Description

Located on the p-arm of chromosome 9, this particular gene is part of a cluster of CC cytokine genes. Cytokines, a group of secreted proteins, are vital in regulating the immune system and inflammation. The distinguishing feature of CC cytokines is the presence of two adjacent cysteines. Like other chemokines, the protein produced by this gene hampers the production of blood cells and triggers chemotaxis. In laboratory experiments, this protein has exhibited chemotactic properties specifically towards thymocytes and activated T cells, while it fails to attract B cells, macrophages, and neutrophils. Additionally, this cytokine may have a pivotal role in guiding lymphocytes to secondary lymphoid organs. It acts as a high-affinity functional ligand for chemokine receptor 7, which is expressed in T and B lymphocytes and is also a known receptor for another member of the cytokine family known as small inducible cytokine A19.

Background

Inhibits hemopoiesis and stimulates chemotaxis. Chemotactic in vitro for thymocytes and activated T-cells, but not for B-cells, macrophages, or neutrophils.
