Description

Description

RPMI 1640, an enhanced variant of McCoy's 5A medium, derives its name from the place where it was developed, Roswell Park Memorial Institute.Initially, RPMI 1640 was employed for cultivating human leukemia cells in suspension or monolayer culture. It was discovered that this particular medium was very conducive for the growth and proliferation of various cell lines such as HeLa, Jurkat, McF-7, PC12, cancer cells, and even different types of immune cells such as B and T lymphocytes. Additionally, astrocytes, which are specialized cells in the nervous system, were also found to thrive in this medium. This finding highlighted the importance of having a suitable and adaptable culture medium to support diverse cell types for research purposes and medical applications.

Compared to other types of media, RPMI 1640 media is distinctive as it contains elevated levels of vitamins and reduced glutathione.EMEM and DMEM do not contain biotin, vitamin B12, and p-aminobenzoic acid, which are present in RPMI 1640 medium. Additionally, RPMI 1640 medium has higher levels of inositol and choline chloride compared to EMEM and DMEM. These differences in composition make RPMI 1640 medium unique and suitable for specific cell culture requirements.

RPMI 1640 (MODIFIED ATCC) is a variation of the conventional RPMI 1640 medium. In this modified version, the glucose content is increased from 2.0g/L to 4.5g/L, while the sodium bicarbonate content is decreased from 2.0g/L to 1.5g/L. This alteration is aimed at providing a nutrient-rich environment with higher glucose concentration while adjusting the pH buffering capacity. By modifying these specific components, RPMI 1640 (MODIFIED ATCC) offers an optimized formulation for cell culture and research purposes.
