The protein is a lysine demethylase that plays a role in gene regulation by removing methyl groups from specific lysine residues on histone proteins. The HYA gene, which is the human homolog of a selected mouse cDNA on the Y chromosome, is also associated with H-Y antigen production. The protein is important for male-specific immune responses and plays a role in male development and fertility. Additionally, the protein SmcY is also a homolog of the SMC family on the Y chromosome.
