Description

Biliverdin is produced when heme oxygenase breaks the heme ring at the alpha methene bridge. Biliverdin is then converted to bilirubin by biliverdin reductase. Heme oxygenase is most active in the spleen in normal conditions because it is where old red blood cells are destroyed. In the brain, heme oxygenase 2 may be responsible for the production of carbon monoxide, which could act as a neurotransmitter.
