Alpha- and beta-tubulin, two soluble proteins with a molecular weight of approximately 55,000 kilodaltons each, make up the key components of microtubules. Microtubules play crucial roles in cell division, cellular movement, and maintaining cell shape and stability. Their dynamic nature and ability to assemble and disassemble are essential for numerous cellular processes.
When it comes to Western Blotting, antibodies that target beta Tubulin are commonly employed as loading controls. However, it is important to keep in mind that the levels of beta Tubulin within certain cells may not be consistent. For instance, adipose tissue exhibits very low expression of tubulin (as pointed out in Spiegelman and Farmer's 1982 publication in Cell), and thus the use of beta Tubulin as a loading control for these types of tissues would not be appropriate.
