The gel itself is composed of Acrylamide (referred to as Acryl) and the cross-linking agent methyldiacrylamide, also known as N, N'-methylene bisacrylamide (BIS). The deposition of BIS occurs through the catalytic action of TEMED (N,N,N',N'-tetramethylenediamine), which triggers the reduction of perthionine in the presence of free radicals. This initiation step initiates the polymerization reaction, resulting in the formation of a charge-free molecular sieve network structure. To summarize, Acryl-bis is a key component in the production of polyacrylamide gels.
