Research on cytokine detection has found IFN-γ to be the most commonly detected marker. The versatility and importance of IFN-γ make it a valuable area of research, with numerous studies and developments being conducted to further understand and utilize this vital cytokine.

 



Type II interferon, also known as γ interferon, has significant immunomodulatory functions and is particularly noted for its potent antiviral activity. The cytokine plays a crucial role in host defense by exerting anti-proliferative, immunomodulatory, and antiviral effects. When present in various cellular types, γ interferon can trigger the production of cytokines while also upregulating the expression of a range of membrane proteins, such as MHC-I, MHC-II, Fc receptors, B7 family antigens, and leukocyte adhesion molecules. By stimulating macrophages and guiding the synthesis, transformation, and secretion of B cell immunoglobulin, γ interferon is of immense importance in immune responses. Additionally, γ interferon has significant effects on the differentiation of T helper cell subtypes, suppressing Th2 differentiation while promoting Th1 growth. Apart from its role in autoimmunity, γ interferon has been shown to influence the development of some inflammatory diseases, including atherosclerosis.

 



Interferon, a glycosylated dimer with a molecular weight of 20-25 kDa, exhibits biological activity. Characterized by high homology among different species, it shares 90% sequence similarity with bovine, dog, horse, cat and pig gamma interferon, while the homology with cotton mouse, mouse and rat gamma interferon ranges from 59-64%. The interferon dimer initially binds to the transmembrane receptor IFN-γ RI unit, followed by binding with IFN-γ RII unit, forming a functional complex consisting of two alpha and two beta subunits. IFN-γ RII can elevate ligand affinity and enhance signal transduction efficiency. Despite being constitutively expressed in multiple cell types, beta subunit modulates the expression of gamma subunit. The interferon response is strictly regulated and influenced by a cell's gamma subunit expression.

 



Many different types of cells secrete γ Interferon in response to inflammatory conditions. These include dendritic epidermis and γ δ T cells, as well as peripheral blood γ δ T cells, keratinocytes, mast cells, neurons, CD8+T cells, macrophages, B cells, neutrophils, natural killer cells, CD4+T cells and even testicular sperm cells. The secretion of γ Interferon is a complex and important process that helps to regulate the immune system and promote healing in the body. Despite its widespread production, there is still much to learn about the many roles that γ Interferon plays in health and disease.

 


IFN-γ, also known as macrophage activating factor, is a cytokine that exists as a water-soluble dimer. It is the only member of type II interferon and is typically produced by activated T cells and natural killer cells (NK cells). Due to its anti-viral, immunomodulatory, and anti-tumor properties, IFN-γ plays a significant role in various biological processes. Additionally, it is a signature cytokine of Th1 cells and can bind to the alpha-interferon receptor (IFNGR). Overall, the importance of IFN-γ lies in its ability to regulate immune responses, making it an essential component of the immune system.
